Effective from 11 August 2026
Selective Singles — Terms of Service
Version: v2.1 · Effective from 11 August 2026
Replaces: Terms of Service v2.0 dated 4 June 2026.
These terms govern your use of the Selective Singles website at selectivesingles.co.uk, your attendance at any private consultation, and your membership of the service.
If you become a paying member at Select, Signature or Exclusive tier, additional and more detailed terms are set out in the separate Membership Agreement which you sign at the time of joining. Where these Terms and the Membership Agreement conflict, the Membership Agreement takes precedence for paying members.
1. About Selective Singles
Selective Singles Ltd (Company No. 17060568, registered office 167–169 Great Portland Street, London, W1W 5PF — "Selective Singles", "we", "our", "us") is a private matchmaking and relationship introduction service registered in England and Wales.
We are an approved member of the Association of British Introduction Agencies (ABIA) and adhere to its published code of practice.
We are registered with the UK Information Commissioner's Office under registration number ZC152962.
We provide private consultations, compatibility assessments and personalised introductions for consenting adult members seeking long-term relationships.
2. Definitions
In these Terms:
- "Member" means any individual who has applied to join Selective Singles and whose application has been accepted, at any tier.
- "Membership" means the contractual relationship between a Member and Selective Singles, on whichever tier the Member has joined.
- "Tier" means one of the three service levels: Select, Signature, or Exclusive. Select is sometimes offered without charge, on invitation; where it is, these Terms apply in full save that no fee is payable and the Membership does not renew automatically.
- "Term" means the period of your Membership, beginning on the Activation Date and running for the length set out in your Membership Agreement.
- "Consultation" means a private session, usually conducted by video call or in person, in which one of our consultants discusses your circumstances, criteria and suitability.
- "Match" has the meaning given in our Membership Agreement: it is the sharing of another Member's profile that our consultants have selected, on the basis of criteria you have provided, as a suitable potential introduction.
3. Eligibility
You must:
3.1 be aged 18 years or over;
3.2 provide accurate and truthful personal information;
3.3 be legally free to enter into a serious relationship with another adult;
3.4 be ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom (we may from time to time accept members ordinarily resident elsewhere at our discretion);
3.5 complete any identity verification we ask of you. No introduction is made until your identity has been verified, and the same applies to the other member. We may request proof of identity at any point, and may decline or end a Membership where it is not provided.
Selective Singles reserves the right to decline applications, terminate memberships, or refuse to renew memberships at its discretion. Where we decline an application we will refund any consultation fee paid for a consultation that has not yet taken place.
4. The tiers
Selective Singles operates three tiers of membership: Select, Signature and Exclusive. The fee for each tier, the inclusions, and the length of the Term are set out in the Membership Agreement you sign on joining, and are published on selectivesingles.co.uk. No fees are stated in these Terms.
4.1 Select. Select is a three (3) month membership, billed monthly, beginning on the Activation Date. It renews automatically for further three-month terms unless ended in accordance with clause 6.4.
At Select we identify potential introductions on the basis of the preferences you have given us and your compatibility with those other members who are available for matching at the time. We do not guarantee any minimum number of matches, and we do not guarantee that any match will be made.
4.2 Select offered without charge. We may from time to time offer Select membership on a complimentary basis, by invitation. A complimentary Select membership carries the same Term and the same service as a paid Select membership, save that no fee is payable and it does not renew automatically: it ends at the end of its Term unless we offer to extend it.
4.3 Signature and Exclusive. Signature and Exclusive are six (6) month memberships. Their inclusions, including a guaranteed minimum of four (4) matches during the six-month term, are set out in the Membership Agreement that you sign on joining. The current inclusions are also published on selectivesingles.co.uk.
5. Consultations
5.1 Consultations are private and are typically conducted by video call or, on request, in person. They are designed to assess compatibility, criteria and suitability for membership.
5.2 Consultations must be booked in advance and the consultation fee published at the time of booking (where applicable) is payable at the time of booking.
5.3 Consultation fees are non-refundable once the consultation has taken place. If you cancel a consultation with at least 24 hours' notice, you may reschedule once at no charge. With less than 24 hours' notice the fee is forfeited unless we are able to offer the slot to another member.
5.4 Members holding Select on a complimentary basis may be invited to a free initial consultation at our discretion.
6. Becoming a paying member
6.1 If, after your consultation, we offer you a paid Membership and you wish to accept, you will be issued with:
(a) a copy of the Membership Agreement to review and digitally sign; and
(b) a secure payment link via our payment provider (Stripe).
6.2 The Membership Agreement is a separate contract that sets out the full terms of the paid Membership, including the fee, the Activation Date, the length of the Term, any minimum match guarantee applicable to your tier, the 14-day cooling-off period, the cancellation and refund position, and the Member's obligations.
6.3 Your paid Membership Term begins on the Activation Date, which is the date on which we confirm receipt of your payment. Where a Membership is granted without charge, the Term begins on the date we confirm your Membership.
6.4 Automatic renewal and ending your Membership (Select).
(a) Your initial Term is three months from the Activation Date. At the end of that Term your Membership renews automatically for a further three months, and continues to renew in the same way, unless it is ended under this clause.
(b) To end your Membership at the end of the current Term you must give us notice at least seven (7) days before the Term end date. You may do this from your member dashboard, or by writing to private@selectivesingles.co.uk. Notice given less than seven days before the Term end date takes effect at the end of the following Term.
(c) We will confirm in writing the date on which your Membership will end. You keep full access to the service until that date, and your monthly payments continue until then. Ending your Membership stops any further payment after that date; it does not refund fees already paid.
(d) You may withdraw your notice at any time before the end date, from your dashboard or by writing to us, and your Membership will continue as before.
(e) Where Select is held on a complimentary basis there is no automatic renewal and no fee: the Membership simply ends at the end of its Term unless we offer to extend it. You may still end it earlier by telling us.
6.5 Signature and Exclusive memberships run for their six-month Term and do not renew automatically. We will contact you before the end of the Term if a further Term is available to you.
7. Cooling-off period
7.1 If you are signing the Membership Agreement remotely, you have a statutory right under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 to cancel your Membership within fourteen (14) calendar days of the Activation Date.
7.2 If you ask us to begin providing the service during this 14-day period — which we will only do if you tick the relevant box in the Membership Agreement — and you then exercise your right to cancel within the 14 days, we will refund the fee paid less a 25% administrative charge to cover profile creation, vetting and initial matching work undertaken from the Activation Date. The 25% retention is set out in detail in clause 6.2 of the Membership Agreement.
7.3 If you do not tick the box to begin service during the cooling-off period and you cancel within the 14 days, you are entitled to a full refund of the fee paid.
8. Cancellation outside the cooling-off period
8.1 Membership fees are otherwise non-refundable except as set out in the Membership Agreement (which includes, for example, a remedy where Selective Singles fails to deliver the minimum number of matches by the End Date at a tier where a minimum is guaranteed, and a pro-rata refund where Selective Singles terminates without cause).
8.2 We may, in genuinely exceptional circumstances and at our sole discretion, offer a partial refund where strict application of these terms would be unreasonable.
8.3 Ending a Select Membership under clause 6.4 stops further payments from the end date we confirm to you. It does not entitle you to a refund of fees already paid for the current or any earlier Term.
9. Confidentiality and discretion
9.1 Discretion is a fundamental part of our service. We hold and process your personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy at selectivesingles.co.uk/privacy/.
9.2 You agree to treat the identities, profiles and personal details of other members in complete confidence and not to share, publish or disseminate any information about them at any time.
9.3 Specifically, and without limiting the above, you must not publish or share any information about another member on any social media platform — including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, WhatsApp groups, blogs, podcasts or any other public or semi-public forum — without the express prior written permission of that member.
9.4 Breach of this confidentiality obligation is a serious matter and grounds for immediate termination of Membership without refund, in addition to any other remedies we may have at law.
10. Member conduct
10.1 Members must behave respectfully and honestly toward consultants, other members, and any third parties encountered in connection with the service.
10.2 Selective Singles may terminate Membership immediately and without refund where a Member:
(a) provides materially false information;
(b) harasses, threatens, defames, or behaves dishonestly toward any consultant or member;
(c) attempts to use the service for any unlawful purpose;
(d) breaches the confidentiality obligation in clause 9; or
(e) commits any other material breach of these Terms or the Membership Agreement.
10.3 Members are responsible for their own personal interactions following any introduction. Selective Singles is not a chaperone, escort, or guardian, and has no role beyond making the introduction.
11. Service is not a relationship guarantee
11.1 Matchmaking is a judgement-driven human service. We use our reasonable skill and care to identify suitable potential introductions based on the information you provide and the membership available at any given time.
11.2 We do not guarantee that any introduction will result in a relationship, a meeting, mutual interest, or any other particular outcome. The success of any introduction depends on factors outside our control.
11.3 At Signature and Exclusive we do, however, guarantee the delivery of a minimum number of matches during the Term, as set out in the Membership Agreement. At Select, whether paid or complimentary, no minimum number of matches is guaranteed: we introduce members on the basis of their stated preferences and their compatibility with the membership available at the time.
11.4 Your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — including the right to a service performed with reasonable care and skill — are not affected by anything in these Terms.
12. Limitation of liability
12.1 Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits Selective Singles's liability for: (a) death or personal injury caused by negligence; (b) fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or (c) any other liability which cannot lawfully be excluded.
12.2 Subject to clause 12.1, our total liability to you under or in connection with these Terms or any Membership shall be limited to the total amount of fees paid by you in respect of the relevant Membership or service.
12.3 We will not be liable for any indirect, consequential or special losses, nor for any loss of opportunity, arising from any introduction made or not made under the service.
12.4 We are not liable for any actions, behaviour, conduct or relationship outcome of any other Member or third party introduced to you.
13. Complaints procedure
If you are unhappy with any aspect of the service, we ask that you raise your concern with us as follows so that we can put it right.
Step 1 — Talk to your consultant. Most concerns are resolved best through a direct conversation. Please contact your assigned consultant or matchmaker first.
Step 2 — Write to us formally. If the matter is not resolved at Step 1, please put your complaint in writing to:
Selective Singles Ltd 167–169 Great Portland Street, London, W1W 5PF Email: private@selectivesingles.co.uk For the attention of: The Complaints Officer
Please mark the email subject line "Formal complaint" and describe:
- what happened and when;
- what outcome you are seeking; and
- any supporting context (e.g. dates, names of consultants, copies of correspondence).
We will acknowledge your written complaint within five working days and aim to provide a substantive response within twenty working days. Where a matter is complex and a longer investigation is needed, we will keep you informed.
Step 3 — Refer to ABIA. If your complaint relates to our adherence to the ABIA code of practice and we have not resolved it to your satisfaction, you may refer it to the Association of British Introduction Agencies via abia.org.uk.
Step 4 — Refer to a third party. For data protection complaints, you may also contact the Information Commissioner's Office (see our Privacy Policy). For payment-related complaints that we cannot resolve internally, you may have rights under the Financial Ombudsman Service via your bank or card provider.
Nothing in this procedure affects your right to seek independent legal advice at any stage.
14. Fees and payment
14.1 Consultation and Membership fees are disclosed before engagement. The published prices are inclusive of VAT where applicable.
14.2 Payments are processed by Stripe, a regulated payment provider. We do not see or store your card details. Stripe's terms apply to the payment transaction itself.
15. Force majeure
We will not be liable to you for any failure or delay in performing our obligations where that failure or delay is caused by events outside our reasonable control (including but not limited to natural disasters, war, civil unrest, pandemic, government action, internet or hosting failure). We will use reasonable efforts to mitigate the impact and resume service as soon as practicable.
16. Cookies
We use a small number of cookies on selectivesingles.co.uk and our member portal at members.selectivesingles.co.uk. The detail of each cookie is set out in our Privacy Policy. You can adjust cookie preferences in your browser settings.
17. Intellectual property
The Selective Singles name, logo, branded materials, website content and member portal interface are owned by Selective Singles Ltd or licensed to us. You may not reproduce, adapt or use them without our prior written permission.
You retain ownership of the content you provide (your profile information, photographs etc.) but you grant us a licence to use that content for the purpose of providing the service, in line with our Privacy Policy.
18. General
18.1 Entire agreement. These Terms, the Privacy Policy and (for paid Members) the Membership Agreement constitute the entire agreement between you and Selective Singles in relation to the service.
18.2 Variation. We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Effective from" date at the top of the document shows when the current version came into force. Material changes will be notified to active members by email and posted on selectivesingles.co.uk at least 14 days in advance.
18.3 Severability. If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remainder of the Terms continue in force.
18.4 No waiver. Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms will not be a waiver of that right or provision.
18.5 Assignment. You may not assign or transfer your Membership without our written consent. We may assign our rights and obligations under these Terms in the event of a sale, merger or restructuring of Selective Singles Ltd, provided your rights are not adversely affected.
18.6 Notices. Notices to Selective Singles should be sent to private@selectivesingles.co.uk. Notices to you will be sent to the email address we have on file for you.
19. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. You and Selective Singles agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
